Petmin acquired Somkhele in pre-feasibility stage in 2005. The open cast mining operation and first plant were commissioned in 2007. There are now two additional processing plants, one of which is dedicated to processing of discard to produce an energy product.

The Somkhele mine employs more than 950 people, with approximately 80% of employees from the local community.

In 2015 Petmin announced an agreement for a R350m BBBEE transaction giving the local community and employees a 20% stake in Somkhele.
